Derek Hynd | The Man & The Sea

Derek Hynd

Derek Hynd

Some months back I contacted Derek Hynd with hopes of conducting an interview. His surfing and philosophy have both inspired and perplexed me. I wanted to know more about this seemingly enigmatic and misunderstood figure in the surf world. I thought he may enjoy my writing and we would share an immediate kinship. Now I sit with the realization that I had been overly positive about my ability to lockdown an interview with Hynd.

Mr. Hynd was kind enough to get back to me, but I suppose he was skeptical about a “nobody” like myself doing a feature with him. He seemed sarcastic and unfriendly to be honest, maybe from years of doing boring interviews that carried themselves out with the standard questions. I can only speculate as to why Mr. Hynd didn’t want to partake in the interview, I thought it would have been an interesting one. I imagine when you’ve graced the pages of the most prolific surf magazines, as both the writer and the subject, doing something for a small surf-based blog isn’t very appetizing. So far, Hynd remains elusive, and that much more of personal interest to myself.

In any event, Hynd’s surfing, philosophy, and overall way of being; still excite my interest. I hold the hope of getting my day with Derek, maybe it will just be something better than I had initially conjured up in my mind.

The film below is one of my favorite visual offerings, capturing the iconoclastic surfing and beautiful philosophy of this almost wizardly being. There was no love lost on my end Derek and this film only furthers my interest in a surfer who defines freedom.

Enjoy his beautiful friction-free glide and philosophical musings.
