Bob & Sink: The Trial and Error of Ryan Burch
Coming from the indoctrination of contest surfing, as many of us who grew up surfing from a young age have, Ryan Burch took what he learned from that schooling and began to blaze his own watery trail of spray and foam. Once a stalwart devotee of the tri-fin and so-called high performance surfing lineage, in recent years Ryan has experimented with, created, and made others interested in some very unique equipment and approaches to riding waves. There is a childlike playfulness to his surfing coupled with a dazzling precision that makes it such a pleasure to witness. He has the ability to truly ride just about anything across the face of the wave, while making it look completely functional…and fun! That coupled with his ever increasing creation of some mind boggling surf craft makes Mr. Burch someone who injects a wonderful freedom and freshness into the surfing community.
Simply stated, Ryan is one of the most eclectic and captivating young surfers around today. Although the reemergence of the surfing “renaissance man” has certainly seen more prominence in the last decade, even among the crop of surfer meets shaper meets artist, Burch is drawing his own lines and carving deeply into his own niche.
“Bob and Sink. The Trial and Error of Ryan Burch” is a short film made by his friend Cyrus Sutton, the man behind Korduroy.tv. Watch for more on Ryan’s story, his wild surfboard shapes, and wave-riding prowess.
